I would like to talk about an anime which I feel has not gotten a large following, despite it being a pretty good anime. It is called Corpse Princess or in Japanese: 屍姫 – Shikabane Hime. The artwork is, in my opinion, above average and the plot holds interest with a look into Japanese culture a little more than mainstream anime titles. The manga series was written and illustrated by Yoshiichi Akahito, and was serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan in 2005. The anime is licensed now by Funimation, like most other anime.
The story is based on the existence of Shikabane, monsters that are created when a human is killed or dies with regrets, and Shikabane Hime which are shikabane that were paired with a contractor monk and have taken on the responsibility of fighting the vicious and bloodthirsty shikabane. Only a female shikabane can become a Shikabane Hime, that stipulation came up in one of the episodes where one of the wild shikabane bemoaned his gender claiming it was unfair for only girls to be allowed into the Kougon Sect as the hime. A shikabane hime’s job is to kill 108 shilkabane in order to reach enlightenment and make it into heaven. Makina Hoshimura is one such Shikabane Hime, one with a curse, that was murdered and then paired with the contractor monk Keisei Tagami, with whom she fell in love.
Makina aims to avenge her family, also murdered, by defeating a group of malevolent Shikabane called the Seven Stars.
After Keisei’s death, his adopted younger brother Ouri Kagami takes over his contract with Makina. The rest of the story follows Ouri and Makina in their battles to defeat shikabane, stay contracted despite the disapproval of other monks in the Kougon Sect and deepen the bond between themselves by their love for Keisei.
Ouri Kagami kind of reminds me of Sawada Tsunayoshi from Hitman Reborn! in appearance and behavior. Admittedly, I feel Ouri is a bit more outspoken than Tsuna-kun.
I also thought this guy was insanely beautiful. He is the Dai Sojo, who is the monk at the very top of the totem pole in the Kougon Sect. Basically he is the head honcho who makes all the important decisions and oversees all the other monks.
In my opinion, the anime is great and I wish it could have had a bit more exposure. So, here I am exposing it to you all. I recommend that you watch it if you haven’t already. I doubt you will be disappointed. ^_^
